An old building in downtown Berkeley, near the university. This is the building that contains Berkeley Arts, where several performances reviewed here at CatSynth have taken place, including a this show last Sunday and Reconnaissance Fly’s CD release show.
I’m fascinated by architecture of all kinds, as I do housing design. Outside stairs possible configurations are something I contemplate now and then, either in my mind or by observing what I see, this triggers that process 🙂 Very cool how they go from level to level. As alwasy I love how you bring vibrancy to drab 🙂 and give it a story.
Upper floors are apartments, the bottom floor was storefronts which have been turned into an arts space. I also should note that this view is the rear of the building. External staircases are common on older buildings here 🙂

Great lines and so urban. I would not have expected this building to be a site for the performing arts.
Awesome capture! Thanks for sharing!
I’m with Beth. I wouldn’t have imagined this was a building for the arts!

I wonder if these are meant to serve as fire (or other emergency) escape? We have several here, but they are inside the buildings in most cases.
